Claudio Ranieri has been appointed Roma manager for a second time
, despite only being sacked by Fulham last week.
The Italian, 67, was born in the capital city and took charge of his boyhood club from 2009-11, during which time he guided them to second in Serie A. He has signed a deal until the end of the season.
A Premier League title-winner at Leicester, Ranieri's return to the English top-flight with relegation-threatened Fulham lasted just 106 days. He was sacked last Thursday after defeat at Southampton left the Whites 10 points from safety in 19th place.
Roma, who sacked Eusebio Di Francesco on Thursday after his side were knocked out of the Champions League by Porto this week, also parted company with sporting director Ramon Rodriguez, know as Monchi, on Friday.
“I’m delighted to be coming back home,” Ranieri told the club website.
“When Roma call you, it’s impossible to say no.”
Director Francesco Totti added: “Claudio’s from the city, he’s a Roma fan but more than that, he’s one of the most experienced coaches in world football,
“What we need now is a safe pair of hands to guide us back into the top four and ensure that we are playing Champions League football again next season. We have 12 games left and we need to win as many of them as possible.”
Roma sit fifth in Serie A and face Emopli on Monday night in what will be Ranieri’s first game back at the Stadio Olimpico.
