White House gives North Korea ultimatum for having talks

 

The White House on Sunday said any discussions with North Korea must lead to the regime ending its nuclear program, as Pyongyang officials in South Korea for the Winter Olympics said their government was open to talks with the United States.
The Trump administration “is committed to achieving the complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” the White House said in a statement. “We will see if Pyongyang’s message today, that it is willing to hold talks, represents the first steps along the path to denuclearization.”
The North Korean delegation met at an undisclosed location with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, and signaled a willingness to meet with the United States, his office said in a statement.
The North has “ample intentions of holding talks with the United States,” it said.
The overture comes just days after the Trump administration approved a new set of sanctions targeting the country’s shipping and trading companies to isolate President Kim Jong Un.
