Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has been dressing to impress during his visit to India.
But, sadly for him, he’s been given a unanimous thumbs down on social media. For the first two days of his trip he was praised for wearing Indian attire but it did not take long for accusations of ‘fancy dress’ and ‘fake’ to surface. He arrived on Saturday but by Wednesday it appeared everyone was willing to have a pop, including politicians, authors, journalists and anyone with a Twitter account.
Omar Abdullah, former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, tweeted saying Trudeau’s choice of clothing was ‘all just a bit much.’ He said: ‘We Indians do not dress like this every day sir, not even in Bollywood.’ Shekhar Gupta, founder of Indian newspaper The Print, claimed Trudeau was a ‘running a week-long “election campaign” in India in fancy dress.’ In an editorial, Outlook India claimed Trudeau was ‘too flashy even for an Indian.’
His decision to turn up in a golden jacket to a party with Bollywood stars, who all had dressed down for the occasion was the last straw.
There was an avalanche of criticism on Twitter on his clothing, but always one to spot a prevailing wind Trudeau dressed in a western-style suit for his next day’s engagements. India Today wrote: ‘We understand that the Trudeaus do not understand Indian clothing as well as Indian dignitaries do, but for someone who’s been fond of wearing Indian kurtas even back home, it’s not wrong to expect a touch of class.’
Due to Trudeau’s support of Sikh separatist groups many Indian politicians refused to meet him, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi not making the customary welcome at the airport.
