You might think that the best street food in New York would be pizza.

It’s all you ever hear about from mates who’ve visited the big apple – how INCREDIBLE the pizza slices are.
But next time you know of someone about to head across the pond, you might want to tell them to forget the ersatz Italian in favour of something far more flavoursome.
Because the best street food in New York is Nigerian.

According to The Vendy Awards – the annual street food competition which determines who is crowned best street food vendor in NYC, DF Nigerian is the greatest food truck operating in the Big Apple.
Founded by Nigerian couple Godshelter and Bisola Oluwalogbon, the truck’s been going for two years.
It all started with Godshelter selling meals out of the back of his car outside the Nigerian embassy in the middle of Manhattan.

Born in Ghana and raised in Nigeria, he immigrated to the US in 2001 and started working in various restaurants before catering for members of his church.
The DF Nigerian food truck started two years ago and the couple has just signed a lease on a restaurant.

In New York – a city with so many different ethnicities – it’s fantastic to see a proper home-grown West African business winning the hearts of diners.
After all, those of us who are from Ghanian and Nigerian backgrounds know how good the food is, but it’s not a particularly mainstream cuisine. At least, not yet.

The truck’s most popular dish?
Jollof rice, of course.
After all, Jollof beats bloody pizza any day of the week.
