5 Ways God Can Help Us Overcome a Dark Past.

Sad Woman at Door

Do you feel that every day you wake up feels pointless, sad or empty? While others may wake up and see the beautiful life that God has given them, you simply can't. You have pain from a dark past that is pushing you down, consuming your thoughts, and making it impossible to see the joy in life. If the pain you’ve suffered in your past is still impacting your life, you won't be able to fully embrace the future life God has ahead of you. Instead, you will be stuck in a frustrating cycle of brokenness that leaves you feeling hopeless.
The key to overcoming your past pain is by choosing to invite God into your life. Here are some ways you can begin opening yourself up to the Lord, so you can accept His grace, love and hope. Through this, you will be able to start the healing process.
Confess to God your pain.
When we have a difficult past, we tend to carry the pain in silence. We tell others that we are doing fine, when in reality we are struggling. Don't waste your time and energy pretending to be happy. With time this will only be detrimental to your overall well-being. Find the courage to admit to God that you are struggling and that you need His help. Have a long chat with God or some fellow believers you can trust about your sadness and what you want to change in order to make things a little better. Through this, you will be able to get started on the healing process.

See yourself the way God sees you.
As a Christian, we can take comfort in knowing that God created us for something more. He made each of us in His image, and thinks that everything about us makes us unique and beautiful. The Lord doesn't see you as a broken, shameful soul that doesn't deserve happiness and love. God thinks the exact opposite. He looks at you and sees a strong, beautiful child of His. No matter what dark past you might be holding on to, God sees your incredible heart. You need to stop putting yourself down and being your own worst enemy, and instead see yourself as a beautiful human the way God does
Leave behind shame and regret, and replace it with grace.
Satan loves to remind God’s children of all the terrible things that have happened to them. The devil wants us to feel shame, regret, loneliness, and the like. This isolates us from God and from happiness. You can't undo the past, but you can learn to accept it and move beyond it with God's grace. It's with God's grace that we can forget the past and create a worthwhile future. Silence the voice of shame in your life so it won’t block the healing that God wants to give you. Instead, recite to yourself: "Lord, thank you for your grace that brings healing from my past."
Learn from your past.
If you don’t find ways to learn from your past pain, you’ll likely be doomed to take the anger out on others or make similar mistakes yourself. Ask God to break the hold that your past has over you and show you what useful lessons you can learn from it so you can begin moving forward. Meditate on what happened, and try to understand what greater lesson you can take away from it. It might be something you can then teach others, so they don't have to go through the similar pain. Through finding a bigger purpose for your pain, it will be easier to come to terms with what happened and take steps forward.
Ask God for guidance on healing.
The healing process is one that takes time and patience, and will be very hard to do without the Lord's help. If your pain was caused by someone else sinning against you, admit to God that you need to forgive the person who hurt you, and ask God to empower you to do so. God is much more powerful than your history, and when you trust Him, God will start to transform your pain into healing and wisdom in your life. Keep starting each day with a positive outlook, and moving forward as best as you can. Prayer, meditation, and reading the Bible are great ways to begin the healing process.
No matter what you have dealt with in your past, there is always hope for your future. God has a great and profound plan for your life that will overshadow even the darkest of moments. When you are lacking hope for your future, the Lord is a beacon of light that you can turn to. He will take the pain you feel and transform it into something positive.
