Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife shared a photo of a three-eyed snake in Australia. This Aussie is a real eye-catcher.
A bizarre snake with a third eye smack dab in the middle of its head was found this week by park rangers on a highway in, of all places, Darwin.
Members of the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife found the juvenile 15-inch-long belly-crawler on the Arnhem Highway near the town of Humpty Doo,
the wildlife agency wrote in a Facebook post.
In the online post, the agency made a reference to the hit HBO show “Game of Thrones,” which has a major plotline centered around a powerful “three-eyed raven.”
“The three-eyed snake warns The Dry is coming!” the wildlife organization wrote, using a play on the show’s tagline, “Winter is coming.”
The post was shared on Facebook more than 14,000 times as of Thursday morning.
An X-ray showed that the snake, has three working eyes, and a single skull.
“The snake is peculiar as an x-ray revealed it was not two separate heads forged together, rather it appeared to be one skull with an additional eye socket and three functioning eyes,” the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife said.
“It was generally agreed that the eye likely developed very early during the embryonic stage of development,” the agency said.
The organization added: “It is extremely unlikely that this is from environmental factors and is almost certainly a natural occurrence as malformed reptiles are relatively common.”
