Joe Jackson, the father of the late Michael Jackson, has died following a battle with cancer at the age of 89. Jackson passed away at 3.30am on Wednesday 27 June in LA, according to TMZ. He was recently hospitalised with his family flocking to be by his side for his final moments including his wife Katherine and his grandchildren. It comes after his son Jermaine told Dailymail.com that the people around the father-of-eleven have prevented the family, including his wife Katherine, from seeing him. He said: ‘No one knew what was going on – we shouldn’t have to beg, plead, and argue to see our own father, especially at a time like this. We have been hurting. ‘We were not being told where he was and couldn’t get the full picture. Even from the doctor. My mother was worried sick. ‘He’s very, very frail, he doesn’t have long. The family needs to be by his bedside – that’s our only intention in his final days.

‘It’s what any family would want, but some people around him think they know better…and they don’t.’ Joe was the manager of his sons’ musical group The Jackson 5, which included Michael. Michael, who died in 2009, spoke about how his father treated them in a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey, saying how he would watch them perform with a belt in his hand and beat them with the belt ‘if you didn’t do it the right way’.

In a documentary with Louis Theroux in 2003, Joe addressed this saying: ‘I whipped him with a switch and a belt. I never beat him. You beat someone with a stick.’ According to the Mail, the musician’s sons and daughters were in heated discussions about their father for four days.

It was only following an emergency Jackson family meeting, in which they pleaded with the senior Jackson’s manager, Charles Coupet, that the family were able to see him on Tuesday night.

The family was distraught by the lack of information surrounding him, but it appeared Joe had given verbal instructions preventing visitors and family members from seeing him or his medical records.  It is believed that his daughters, Robbie and Joh’Vonnie, along with granddaughter Yashi Brown, visited him in Las Vegas, Nevada on Tuesday.

Jackson had been poorly for a number of years. According to reports, he had suffered a stroke on his 87th birthday. In 2017 he, along with daughter Janet had been involved in a car accident near the Las Vegas Strip after a red SUV hit the Black Jaguar where Joe was in the passenger seat. He was later rushed to hospital, but had ‘got out of it without a scratch.
