A guitarist has died after falling from an escalator into a food court while ‘clowning around’. Josh Martin, a 45-year-old guitarist with the band Anal C**t, is said to have lost his balance, fallen backwards and hit his head on a table after losing his balance while riding the escalator.
Police told local reporters that he fell one storey from the cinema level to the food court below at Providence Place Mall shortly before 11pm on Monday evening. A report described him as ‘clowning around and riding the rail of the escalator’ and fell off as he approached the downward part of the handrail. He appeared on a variety of albums with the grindcore band between 1996 and 2011 working including 40 More Reasons to Hate us, It Just Gets Worse, and Fuckin A.
Friends confirmed his death to Vanyaland. Police chief Hugh Clements told WPRO-AM that Josh suffered ‘massive injuries’ and he was declared dead at hospital. Police major David Lapatin told Eyewitness News: ‘It’s quite a big drop. Anybody who has been to the Providence Place mall in the food court, you see the two escalators going up to the movie theater and Dave & Buster’s, you know how high that is. Police say the death appears to be accidental, but they are now reviewing surveillance video as part of the investigation. There have been a handful of deaths at the mall since it opened in 1999, including other people falling from escalators. A man died in 2006 after he jumped between escalators and fell. A spokesman for the mall said: ‘Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time. We thank local law enforcement for their leadership and direct all inquiries to the Providence Police Department as this is their investigation.’
